And it is not what I expected.
To sum up some of the main points: *The game will be developed with input from the community. *The game will be free, but the editor will not. And not "free-to-play" like an iphone game with in-app purchases and paywalls. *However, community-made mods can be sold or simply distributed on a "marketplace." *Epic gets a cut from anything sold on the marketplace, of course. *The editor will be subscription-based ![]() *Will be open source, and they have even setup a github *Will be for PC/Mac/Linux, not consoles It's almost like Epic plans to do the game engine, basic stuff like game modes and a few maps, but let the community do a lot of the work. I can't say that's terrible. One thing I really don't like is that modders will pay $20/month for access to dev tools. I think that might change later on, but it is BS for people who dabble one or two weekends a month. I'd much rather pay an up-front price similar to the cost of a game ($40-60) that would give me access forever. I'm also on the fence about the marketplace. It will make it easy for people doing large scale mods, or smaller stuff like maps to release their stuff, but the ability to monetize it is a bit weird. And what exactly can, or will be sold? Total conversions? Maps? Characters? Game modes? And lets say you put something you bought on a server...How would that work? Would people be able to play a for-sale map or mutator or what? Wouldn't that decrease the number of people playing those mods? If the marketplace is used primarily for distribution of free content, that's fine. I've been playing a bit of civilization 5 on steam, and they have a nice setup for mods: You can "subscribe" to various mods and they will automatically update for you whenever the modder changes it. So that makes it a lot easier to get content out there... but Civ5 is a single player game. A mostly multiplayer game like UT is about servers. How would the marketplace work with them? But this is just the announcement. I'll be following this on the new UT forum to see how this pans out.

Unreal Engine 4 came out a while back, but they are actually starting work on a new UT this time.

Hi, I'm Dragon7350 and I have a virus dog GOMMIT. (No playing from me for a while
![]() Saw UT4 on the PS4 demo gathering and it looked pretty neat. Yeah, it would be interesting to see how that marketplace works out with custom servers. If it DOES work out for the best, we should totally move DC to that . . . I'll buy :p. But really, I'm kind of hesitant to consider this new UT game. What can top UT2004? I mean, seriously... ![]() |

It is interesting after watching the video of the UT4 trailer.
UT/UT3/UT4 all feature the original weapons from Unreal/Unreal Gold. UT2004 is the only tournament game that has the different weapons (not talking about the magical properties). Orson Welles |

On sort of a whim, I decided to buy a new pc yesterday. (This one from Best Buy.)
So far, so good. Getting great performance in UT2004 of course, and tested some games that ran poorly on my old PC, like Deus Ex Human Revolution. Old one I could only run in 640x480 and still got crappy fps. Was able to run it with everything maxed at my monitor's native 1280x1024. So I decided to try out the UE4 "Shooter Game" demo. Got around 10fps on the High Quality setting and a somewhat ok 25-30 fps on Low. And that's with the built-in graphics. So with a PSU (this only has a 350 watt ![]() ![]() Here's a link to the Shooter Demo, it's a good test of whether you will be able to run UT4. http://www.geeks3d.com/20140501/unreal-engine-4-tech-demos-pack-including-elemental-and-a-shooter-game-download/ Video:
