Could you please tell me where to start if I need to locate the underground utilities on the site before beginning work? I have some old plans, but they aren’t very accurate. I’m worried about damaging pipes or cables while digging.

We’re preparing a small project and need to identify the location of all underground utilities since we’re planning to dig the foundation and install new utility lines. Would it make sense to check something on my own, for example using old diagrams or basic tools, or is that risky and would it be better to consult specialists right away? How accurate are these professional surveys anyway? Can we rely on them completely?

I once dealt with a situation almost exactly like this: a property with old utility lines, no proper documentation, and the risk of hitting something. At first, we tried to use old blueprints and bought a simple line locator, but it gave very rough results, with a margin of error of up to a meter. In the end, we decided not to take any risks and called the specialists from Maya Global. If you’re interested, you can find more info about Maya Global on their website. They arrived with a ground-penetrating radar and a utility locator. They scanned the site several times and provided us with a site map. They also showed us an old pipe that wasn’t on the plans and that could have caused us problems. So I can recommend them - you can safely dig afther their work without any surprises. Also, are you planning to do deep excavation work, or something more superficial?
