hey hi everybody

it was reported that some people were having some issues with the server that I wasn't aware of while others had some suggestions, ideas for it therefor I opened this thread here so everybody can join the conversation if they feel like it and share their thoughts on this, make suggestions of their own.

so far this spring I've been working in a update of the server, unfortunately I was so ambitious that ended getting lost on the details, then I think that I'll finally just leave that where it's (in the development hell hehe) as a future dev kit without rushing things and I'll just take the server code were it was left and I'll continue from that. then I'm not giving a date neither compromising to fulfill a particular deadline but on the next week/s I hope I can go fixing some of the things that were in the to-do list I was working on hehe so if you've got any problems and/or suggestions feel free to share them here.

hopefully not all work was "lost" most of the optimizations I was working on were already added to the current server so in the end it's not even such a big deal, just saying, I mean.

ok, by now, I've just increased the server slots from 18 to 20 to better accommodate the current players load (it was getting really hard to get a slot at many times) and the new maps. I know that when I designed this I did it mostly with a 18 players limit in mind but well I think that anyways it's ok to stress the things just a bit to have some more room and anyways as always this is always subject to be changed, reviewed at any given time.

sounds good to me. thank you.

i tested your oafreeze server once but did not get really into it since i prefer and "oldschool style" q3. i am excited to see how your optimizations turn out. can you give some details what to watch out for?

haha don't get so excited like I said most of the job with the server has already been done (specially what it comes to optimizations) most than anything I was opening a thread to talk about this so whoever wants can join and participate.

beside that all that is left is just usual maintenance stuff, some tweaks here and there and try to address some bugs, nothing ground breaking, you know.

btw now that I join here report that original Quake 3 scoreboard is limited to 17 slots just saying because of the 20 server slots update you can see "unbalanced" teams, the fact is that is a limitation in Quake 3 so don't freak out if you see 10 vs 7 winning or stuff like that cause there could be more players on the losing team that because of this limitation you can't see. unfortunately the only real "fix" for this would be switch back to 18 slots but I don't think it's justified. beside that I'll try to address some of these things to some extend and I think I'll can update the client for it in the future so far the best approach for this situation is simply try to switch teams if the server doesn't allow then teams are even for sure (obviously apply for the "big" team).

btw that I posted yesterday a updated version of the UnFreeZe Client gamemod mostly fixing the 17 players scoreboard limitation on the servers and I forgot to mention it here too hehehe

you can get the pk3 of the updated dev version here, to install it you just have to place it next to your unfreeze0-client.pk3 file from the full UnFreeZe Client v1.0 package that you can also get here but don't delete/replace (? doesn't really make sense anyways) that last file, keep both installed and inside your unfreeze folder next to your baseq3 folder at the path where you installed Quake 3. if you experience problems make sure you don't have also installed other pk3 files, beside the original Quake 3 pk3's, installed.

this update mostly address (yet basically) the 17 players scoreboard limitation noted on the previous post, now the scoreboard fits for 20 players it also adds a colored crosshair in magenta in this case for better contrast with the provided models via the console command, \cg_crosshairhealth 0 (default is 1 read next) as some users had requested. in addition since I reviewed the crosshair code it turned out that it never worked as the Quake 3 devs intended it to do (don't really know) so I just fixed it and now by default (\cg_crosshairhealth 1) the crosshair will change in color reflecting your current health status.

so far (after a day) no issues has been found in this version so I think that it can be used for some time, in the future I'll be looking forward polishing it a bit more (in particular the scoreboard) and add other features/fixes but at the moment this is low on my priority list (atm I'm mostly dealing with the server). also if anyone has some other "requests" feel free to make them here if you want (or pm/contact me via web, https://mail.adminless.ovh, etc ...) and I don't promise anything but I'll sure at least take it into consideration in the future.

hey guys updated the UnFreeZe Client gamemod dev pk3 file with a proper (instead of a "quick") fixed 20 players scoreboard so please download the file unfreeze0-dev-client.pk3 agian and replace the one you previously downloaded (if you did) with it. install instructions are like mentioned on the post above. so far until I don't release a packaged v1.1 (if I ever end up doing, at the moment is not justified a new "full" release) all the updates will be in that fashion REdownload and then just REplace the old file. I'll go posting when last changed and also if you browse the ftp (ftp://ftp.adminless.ovh) you can also check the file timestamp if in doubt.

ok, that's it for now, after some serious server core updates the last days (the server performance/response improved like a 20% or so, over an already custom environment around 2x over stock) and some issues here and there I hope I can finally get to work with some game server code and finish this off around this/next week or so.
