Yesterday I tried changing sides, when I was with the winning team and the last flag was threatened. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to join the other team; The only option I had was to automatically join the team chosen by the server.

Is there any way I could have joined the losing team and overridden the automatic team assignation ?

if there is for example 9 on the winning side and 10 on the losing side, go into spectate. this forces an autobalance. once the sides are balanced 9 v's 9 then choose auto select, it will always put you on the losing side if the teams are even

Don't wait to switch on the last flag. Some players on the loosing team will sometimes leave the game. If you keep looking at the scoreboard you will see when a chance comes up. But Harps method is a good method. Just don't wait for the final flag.
If there is no way to change, just go and pick some flowers around the map until you get a chance to change.
You will get used to it soon. After awhile it becomes second nature.

You can also try to force the spawn point back, but don't do this often players will get upset. You can go to a further spawn point and make it the active one by firing a few rounds from within it. Usually works...
