... reading that story just made me want to punch myself in the face over and over again...

People who are so mentally incapacitated as to be unable to search through a server list have no right being a member of society... and probably don't own a computer good enough to play this game anyhow.

Ffffffffuck the noobs... make a game for people that know what they are doing already

Here's my 2 cents. First, the IWNet will be p2p. Before playing COD4, I spent quite a bit of time playing Warrock, an online fps game that had a quene like IW is proposing and p2p. The p2p was such a laggy system that, as the game got more popular, simply created so much lag that it became unplayable.

As far as the gaming rooms that can be set up, they require quite a bit of coordination, including passwords to make sure that they don't fill up randomly. What you won't have is a particular site or sites that you can go to by IP, knowing what to expect. The thing I have liked about COD is the dedicated server concept. If I know the admin or the clan running it, I know that the site is properly policed and I wont have to deal with morons - i get to deal with them all day long.

I guess the IW system will work well when we all know that each other is on line and we can set up rooms together. It doesn't address the ability to go to other sites like the Gibbfactor site we tend to congregate in or the TDS server in WAW that I like. Instead, we have to let the game match us accoring to rank. There will be too much trial and error and, I will loose interest.

IMHO, this is all about control and the ability to charge for content. Isn't it a short step from charging a monthly fee for access to IWNet?

Anyway, I have a lot of work to do on my sailboat this winter if I am going to launch it next spring. I should thank IW. I am not buying the game until I get a feel for how this is all playing out. Until then WAW and 4 will have to suffice.

"The news, by default, means no more browsing through a Server List for a server with the settings / ping you want among other things, and sent shockwaves through the hardcore PC community, leading to many more questions than answers as to ‘HOW’ this would work, and if it would really be better for the PC community as a whole."

BS, as I am almost certain the more appropriate response from the community goes a little more something like this, "WHAT THE FUCK! WHY!, ARE YOU KIDDING?!"

"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is actually the biggest investment Infinity Ward has ever made into the PC version of our games."

*Cough* You fucked that up... *Cough*

"When you do, it will automatically find you a game with the best performance, ping, and preferences based on your location and individual connection as well as matching you with players of your same SKILL."

Oh yeah! I forgot, you guys know whats best for us!, silly me! SKILL huh? So let me guess, # of Kills/# of Deaths, phew, much better than rank....Finding a best suited server worked fine before, OH NOES! I HAVE TO SCROLL! AND READ! !

"It doesn’t mean you’ll just be thrown into a random game! It will put you in the game that will give you the smoothest gameplay possible without you having to manually find a server with the best ping."

Uhm..., you just defined 'thrown into a random game!', good to know they passed logic 101.

"However, say you’re in a clan and you want to play a Clan match........ clan to practice with the custom rules before the match. This now allows you to play custom games out of the box without the need to install mods, find a modded server with the rules you like, or worry about not being in control of the match."

What? We could do that before..., yeah, remember that password button? I guarantee that all the settings utilized by mods such as Promod or DAMN will not be customizable... do not even attempt to deny it.

"Modern Warfare 2 on PC also makes it much easier if you want to party up with your friends, or again, with your clan for a match....It makes setting up scrims or games with friends easier and hassle free."

Yeah, too bad, Dedicated servers were too...

"The biggest benefit of using IWnet by far is the fact that you don’t have to worry about joining a server full of aim-bots, wallhacks, or cheaters. Or relying on the server admin of the server to constantly be monitoring, banning, and policing it. Modern Warfare 2 on PC allows us to control the quality of the game much more than ever before as well as utilizing the VAC (Valve-Anti-Cheat) system to keep games clean of hackers and cheaters."

I have yet to join a game with more than one cheater. Does this mean I have to download Steam?...Better not...I wonder how those guys at PB feel...

But come on now guys, don't be so hard on them, they need jobs too! What better way to spend your time than making a phony console experience for PC gamers?!

Some one should pass this advice on around there, "If it works, don't fix it."

WOW! End Rant! /rantrantrant. Sorry for the read guys.

Bowling also notes that he sees private matches as essentially being the same thing as running a private server, but just easier to use. Of course the final nail in the coffin, according to him, is that the game will be cheat and hack free since it will obviously be much harder to cheat and hack. He also points out that it makes life easier for IW as they now have a better infrastructure to update the game with.

This deep shit never played online and is talking out of his rectum.

Less hackers is clearly bullshit. Anyone who has ever played in a console net knows that there are far less administrators making the decision to ban hackers or even to respond when one is in a room. All you can do is kick them from an individual room. It doesn't work.

I dunno.... I guess I'm a little more optimistic then the rest of the folks. Plus realistically I'm going to wind up buying the game.... just can't help myself.

No more Punkbuster, works good but it's like learning a second language, if anyone has any doubts I'll show you our config files... all 3000 lines of it. I have it nailed down pretty good now but setting it all up as best you can to keep cheaters at bay... screenshots, updates, pb failures, streaming, complaints, more f,ing updates and all the "undocumented features" won't miss that! R.I.P as far as I'm concerned... sucks the fun right out of it. Hopefully VAC will just deal with the cheats and hacks without to much admin intervention.

Modding... to me this fragments the community to much, 16,000 different servers, 5000 different mods, downloading maps, mods jumping on servers that try and dload crap to your PC... never had much use for them..... R.I.P.

To me COD4/5 right now are just to customizable both server and client side, every server seems to have a different "feel" depending on how the variables are set... could ramble on about this forever.. but hey what variable's are screwed up with Kel's setup that he cannot shoot watermelons anymore?.. just to much.

Dedicated servers... the only real reason I would miss them is because this is where relationships were formed, one could jump on a favorite server and over time get to know the other players, other then that they cost money, which ICE deals with.. kudos to him, they are a PITA to setup, the config is a mile long and the stock setup comes with pretty much NO variables, you have to work your way through tons of undocumented variables by trial and error, and googling the world to see how others have done it to get things "tweaked" to where you like them.... meh to much.

So yeah, maybe I'm looking forward to something a little simpler, something where the variables are:

Gametype
Gamelength
Hardcore/No Hardcore
Map Rotation
Max Players

That's it nice and simple where all the servers will have the same "feel". At least that's my hope, but they would really need to lock down client side variable/options for it to work.

Maybe servers will be easier to populate given the nature of how joining games is setup.... so start a server set the rules etc... clan members join.... others that are just looking for a game are auto joined... who knows.

There are just to many questions right now to know how/if this will all work, too bad there is no beta/demo so one could get a feel for it all.

If it's simpler in the end with good game quality I'm all for it.... I'll let you know because as I said I will be purchasing the game.

...as for the "petition" I don't see why I would even look at it until the game is actually out and there is some kind of feedback.

Keeping an open mind at this point

WTF, I can't shoot watermellons either. What have you given me Kel?

Anyway, I hear ya Blind. Maybe your optimism will prevail. I sure hope so.

It's just that the game feels anticlimatic at this point. I'm in no hurry to go spend $1,500 to replace my piece of s**t Dell and another $60 for the game just to be ready to play on the release date. I think if enough PC players delay purchasing, we just might get dedicated server support in a patch. It's worth a try.

If it turns out to be playable and, after the initial adjustment period, everybody thinks the game is worth the effort, I'll probably buy it. By then my new rig should be done.

I'll let you guys be the guinee pigs.

Sailus

Open mind - but less so. : )
