Again, I do hope the GKU server comes back. That said, A few of us use Xfire to communicate what games we are playing in, and to join each other on respective servers.
Xfire is a free app, available here: http://www.xfire.com/download/
Just fire it up before you start gaming, and you can join games your "friends" are already in.

Friend us and you will be able to see our friends as well, hopefully we can all see each other on other servers.
Xfire does some other cool stuff, log on and see who's playing, then all join a game together, etc.
