I usually stick with nvidia, but 5770 has better power eficiency and is DX11. Even with GTX260 having a bit better performance, 5770 seems to be a better long term choice, based on this review.

Sure there are people around with a more expert opinion than me

The 5770 is quite close to the GTX260 in performance. If you play your games @ 1080p, the 5770 will give you decent framerates @ max details though you may not be able to use 4XAA on some games. A single 5770 will get the job done for now. Add another when you have the money. And btw, if you’re into overclocking, don't expect too much of a boost from this though.

Benchmark results says go for GeForce if u want Dx10, and if u want Dx11 take ATi.

Exp. Far Cry 2(DX10@1680*1050) : ATi - 34 fps
Nvd - 42 fps

World in Conflict(DX10@1680*1050) : ATi - 34
Nvd - 40

Crysis(DX10@1920*1200,Very High, AA x4) : ATi - 17.1
Nvd - 16.2

Devil May Cry 4(DX10@1920*1200,8x AA, 16xAF Trilinear) : ATi - 69
Nvd - 69

Edit : BTW, GTX285 owned all of them bout' 20-40 fps in each game and in DX11
