To Scan or Not To Scan?

There is a scan tactic that seems to be all the rage in SWAT and is based on the classic angular search technique common to room to room searching.

The scan is generally performed by the coverman strafing across an open doorway to check for threats in a room about to be searched.
If a tango is seen in the coverman's view port, the pointman will close the door immediately and the team will prepare for dynamic entry. If no threat is detected, the team continues into the room using stealth entry tactics.

The problem I see with this tactic is one of coverage to the coverman's flank. For those who use this tactic in classic 4 and 5 man teams, I would suggest the 3rd man covers that flank. Often I see this tactic used in 3 man teams where this is a highly questionable use of available man power.

For 3 man teams, the 3rd man must cover the rear. In this situation, I would recommend the angular search technique. Angular search will also work for full sized teams of 4 and 5, so it's a great, tactically sound alternative to scanning.

Additionally, during a scan where the pointman must be facing the door in order to close it in a hurry, who is covering the exposed flank? No one! If 3rd man covers it, who is covering the rear? No one! Also the scan is not realistic because shutting a door on a tango would buy you multiple hostile rounds fired through the door and the wall where your team is stacked. In the game this doesn't happen, but we like to play as realistically as the game allows in the 22nd SAS EVR.

In an angular search the team stacks up on the knob side, the EL gives the order to enter and clear, the pointman opens the door, the coverman then moves to the exposed side of the pointman and they continue to move together across the opening with the pointman scanning vertical slices of the room as they move laterally together with the coverman focused on the hall to the pointman's exposed side. If the team is compromised in any direction, issue compliance and engage as needed. If there is contact without compromise then you inform the EL for the decision to approach in stealth or change to dynamic.

The pointman and coverman would end up on the opposite side of the doorway if the search was completed without contact or compromise. The pointman would then enter first, followed closely by the rear guard, then the coverman would collapse into the doorway to cover the hall. Once the room is found or made to be clear, the coverman becomes the new pointman, the rear guard becomes the new coverman and the pointman becomes the new rear guard as they continue to the next room down the hall. Essentially, who enters first would leave last since he probably had the deepest penetration into the room. This tactic goes well with typical 3 man fluid elements.
I don't expect you give more than you have, but I do expect nothing less!

In tough situations, if you are able to reach back for something extra, then you weren't trying hard enough to begin with!

You are only out-gunned if you miss!

If you want a fair fight, see a boxing match. Graveyards are full of blokes who fight fair.
