I found out that all I had to do was turn off "Mouse Integration" to get UT working in a VirtualBox VM. I did not use it tonight because it feels completely different. I must have to tweak the mouse settings. Hopefully I will get to play with the settings soon.

Nice. I'm definitely interested in this. Going to be upgrading my laptop before the end of the year (still settling on a model, might be going to a dual boot Haswell Mac Pro / Ubuntu) and will have to run a VM to play UT. Trying to free up the media machine for the GF so she can entertain herself on our Sunday nights
![]() Let me know how it feels when you're done tweaking it. |

I haven't got around to playing with my settings yet, but I figured out how to get the Linux version of UT2004 working natively. I've read that it is easier to get it working using Wine, but native Linux version should give more FPS. I already like the feel of the Linux version better than running it in a VirtualBox WinXP VM. I did not take detailed notes, but I believe the below is at least 90% of what I had to do to get the native Linux version working.
- "sudo sh linux-installer.sh" from UT2004 DVD - unarchive "ut2004-lnxpatch3369.tar.bz2" patch to UT2004 (overwrite files) - "sudo apt-get install libstdc++5" - (I had reboot, get updates, reboot, and get updates again before - libstdc++5 was fully updated) - install osspd from "Ubuntu Software Center" - (OSS Proxy Daemon: Userland OSS emulation)(To get sound working in UT2004) - run UT2004 using "UT2004/System/ut2004-bin-linux-amd64" Now I will be able to run UT on my 4.0ghz 8-core AMD Ubuntu server instead of my old 1.6ghz Core2Duo pc. I'm coming for you Cypher! ![]() |

Another issue popped up... in Ubuntu (and any Linux) there are difficulties in switching from full-screen games and Ubuntu desktop apps. I've found a couple of work arounds here:

Awesome. Thanks for the write up Ed!
Too bad it's not supported on Steam for either Mac or Linux...which is weird since both OS have a version of the game on CD already. |

Well, I gave up using the native Linux version of UT2k4. There were too many problems switching between full-screen/windowed and getting sound to work nicely with other programs. I just installed Wine and got 2k4 working quite easily through Wine.
I didn't even have to re-install 2k4, I just had to copy the UT2004 folder from my Windows installation and import the [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Unreal Technology] registry keys from Windows into Wine. Works fine. And now the anti-TCC does not freeze UT for 20 seconds before I can get in a map, so hopefully I can stop the other team from capping before I get in the map now. ![]() ![]() |
