GT does not support any dynamic dns addresses at this time. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I've been reading many posts in this forum about people asking GT to add such feature for supporting dynamic IP, or just support "domain named" server, a domain that would resolve to an IP address, the domain is always the same but the IP can change, and GT answer is always the same: "we do not support dynamic IP AT THIS TIME..." or "we may implement this feature in the future but this is low priority...", etc.
My opinion: GT will NEVER implement this feature. Why? Because resolving a domain name to an IP address is too easy to be done and if GT has not implemented this the first time around, and keeps, year after year, saying the same excuse, it's obvious that GT does not want, for some reason, implement it. It is okay not to implement it but please just say so. "We don't have this feature, we have no plans to add it, thank you". I added 3 servers once to GT, unaware of this problem. First time my IP changed, I tried to update it and soon realized that I would lose the ranks and I would have to do the same adding routine everytime the IP would change. Also, I learned that I cannnot use the domain name that I have that resolves to my non-static IP address (DynDNS). So, I gave up on GT. No use for me. I implemented my own query server using GameQ (PHP). |

Old thread, current problem.
Gametracker is a great service but loses a lot by not having this feature. It's a shame really, I guess that this topic has been brought up countless times so it doesn't seem to be the need for further debate. Gametracker.com will never allow dynamic IP addresses, the first service to implement it will gather a lot of attention. |

ner0xv wrote: Hi ner0xy, There are a lot of issues regarding supporting dynamic DNS and there is actually a relatively low demand. You can see a longer explanation at http://www.gametracker.com/games/cod4/forum.php?post=290299#post290299 No user has yet provided a solution other than suggesting that we allow it, and I don't think any of the admins have come up with a safe solution of implementing it. Dynamic dns would be perfectly OK if the tracking was done for your own server, but when GameTracker tracks and ranks over 100,000 servers, you have to actually consider other servers on the website. ![]() |

wait wait wait... you guys are right out stating that youre NOT allowing the manual change of IP addresses for the servers we register?
is it really all that difficult to allow that 1 field, of OUR servers, on OUR accounts, that WE manage and maintain, to be modifiable? cause thats what im reading here from you GT admins. this guy wants to be able to change the IP of his 1 server that he has registered with GT, rather than delete his current server and add another entirely jsut for an IP change. now thats just right out lazy and on top of that, your "No user has yet provided a solution other than suggesting that we allow it" isnt that difficult to find a solution for heres a perfect end all solution to any further similar issues for millennia to come: allow us to enter our "Dynamic DNS" website in the IP address field. my Dynamic DNS address is deathgaming.no-ip.org. and as long as i have my account up, it will NOT change. so if i was allowed to enter that address, you could have the tracking widget display the IP address of my Dynamic DNS address, instead of the named address itself. undyingvisage58 wrote: Changing the IP or using dynamic DNS would be an easy way to exploit the GameTracker system. Unfortunately we cannot degrade the integrity of GameTracker and make it unfair to other server owners until a fool proof method is determined. GT has a large number of projects in its plan, each of which possesses a priority rating. Dynamic IP addressing is relatively low in demand considering most people rent servers with static IP addresses. By the way, the other part of my quote you selectively copied was "I don't think any of the admins have come up with a safe solution of implementing it." So again, in the field of Information Technology there is a lot more to consider than just... having a feature. You also have to think about it: how many people want it, how many people would use it, security issues it would cause, ranking exploits it could cause, and so on. Once you actually think about it, it is in no way, shape or form "simple" to implement. ![]() |

(for some reason I need to post this in separate posts... the whole text makes it time-out every time)
![]() PART 1: undyingvisage58, obviously you make some great points but, if I were you, I wouldn't bother too much arguing with GT staff on this issue. Let’s take the statement of 'burn', the GT admin, for example: "There are a lot of issues regarding supporting dynamic DNS and there is actually a relatively low demand." If you carefully dissect that statement, you can conclude the following: 1. "There are a lot of issues regarding supporting dynamic DNS": So you keep saying. First of all, it must be recognized that the leap from DNS to dynamic DNS is almost nonexistent, so it is very doubtful that the usage of dynamic DNS would bring those mythical issues spoken of, and a 'lot' of them it seems. Also, GT doesn't update servers info that often so... what is the dealio, huh?
