Until that actually takes effect on your server (ie. you restart it to get the server to use the name), you won't be able to claim your server.

Correct - we do not arbitrarily delete servers. I suggest contacting your hosting provider to ask why your config change to adjust the server name is not taking effect after you have tried restarting your server.
