Hi there, i picked up an copy from a retail store.
I downloaded bf2 installed all patches and punkbuster.

Whenever i use Gametracker lite to join a server it takes me to the login screen. Where i have to create an account. Afterwards it tells me 'Server refused connection'.

Any help would be appreciated.

i had the same problem and trying from days until i read on the EA site that since game spy turned down the servers turned down too, Now u can play only from game ranger, i tried it and im playing with no problem

how do i connect what version of the game is needed any help?

I see several servers for Battlefield 2 here on GameTracker ("VBIOS #1 | Classic" with about 60 people for example).

These servers are NOT on GameRanger.

How do people connect to them?

i cant figure it out either i DL the launcher and install it in bf2 folder and it cant see it for some reason any help would be awesome!

Solved it!

They are all using the launcher from www.battlelog.co

Follow these steps:
1. register at Battlelog,
2. download their launcher,
3. update your Punkbuster (BF2 anti-cheat) to latest version,
4. start BF2 and press either "create account" or "retrieve account" (I don't remember which) with the exact name as Battlelog login.

You'll be able to see and play on many multiplayer servers that are still active.
