i tried to play this game again recently after the 1 year break and noticed that every single server i connect installs some mods. is there any way i can play without all these shitty mods like it was a year ago?

Try using the filter in the server browser. The game is 10 years old. People are using mods to keep it interesting. Many of them don't change the game much, just make it possible to play custom maps.

Started a modded server a while back. Over 20 custom maps running. A nice change of pace from the stock servers.
