Question about that: Why is the motd being scanned as server name instead of "server-name"? MOTD is for another purpose, not the server's name.

I recommend reviewing this page on server.properties:

http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Server.properties

You can find a description of why MOTD is actually used for there.

"server-name" has not existed as a configurable option for years. It was in Minecraft classic, but scanning was not supported for that version. After classic, it was used in a query plugin briefly when Minecraft still did not natively support query, but it fell out of use.

That is unusual, but it still says motd is "This is the message that is displayed in the server list of the client, below the name." Note is says "below the name", but "server-name" indeed is not listed. Oddly, I think it is still generated in the "server.properties" file creation.

Will adjust accordingly.
