merlin2016 wrote: Wow - there's some real ill-informed misinformation. Inexperienced newcommers seem to thing that ping is a measurement of speed (merlin says above 'slow internet' lolol). Ping time, measured in milliseconds (hopefully), is a measure of per packet delay. Specifically - Latency. This has absolutely nothing to do with 'slow internet'. Latency doesn't have much to do with server distance these days, given customer premise broadband and most long haul circuits around the country offer latency of a handful of milliseconds. At least one thing merlin said is somewhat valid - another process on your computer - or on some other device on your home network - sucking up a ton of bandwidth can cause you to seem to have poor latency (ie. ping times). If you have high pings, it is generally not something you can fix. But your internet service provider should be able to. Tell them you are consistently getting high latency (use broadband speed test for metrics) and they can possibly help you out.

jaywest1024 wrote: Your ping is the time taken for a packet to go from your PC, to the server, and back again. It can be affected by a variety of things, including; • Bandwidth of your internet connection; what other applications/users are using the bandwidth on your local network. • Your contention ratio • Distance from your local exchange • What, if any, throttling / traffic shaping your ISP is performing • The load of the server you are connecting to ![]() Some of the 'ill-informed' information stated was indeed accurate: I.e - Distance from server is ONE OF THE MAJOR FACTORS influencing latency. Physical distance is also a major factor with regards to download speed (Mbps) as shown below; ![]()
