Multiplayer games over a local area network

We've been playing Medal of Honor over our local area network during lunch breaks at work since it first appeared on the shelves all those years ago, but there's one thing which really baffles me about it. Regardless of a player's ability, their computer's specification or whether or not that particular person is hosting the game or not, for some reason there are certain computers which are much better for playing on than others. For example, my current machine has an Intel Xeon 3.7GHz processor, 16.0GB of RAM, has an AMD FirePro W5000 video card and runs Windows 7 Professional - but despite all this technology, the best machine to play this game on is nearly 10 years old, runs Windows XP, has a less than respectful integrated video card and next to no memory. Everyone fights to get on this machine but nobody can work out why it's so good! There are no cheats active on the system, but whoever uses it seems to wield the Hand of God! Does anybody have a machine like this?
