Standard Game Bots will not use the rocket launcher

Not sure how many people still read this forum but here goes;

To be clear;
1) this is Quake version 1.31, and we have no intention of upgrading to 1.32 as a 'fix'.
2) we will not consider changing server hosts. This is not a hosting problem.

We changed server hosts some months back.
This was / is a standard server hosting service, not a game server host.

We imported our existing VM (Virtual Machine) into the new server, started our Q3 servers, and updated gametracker with our new IP address / ports.

We made no changes to the VM or game configuration, and the servers have been running fine.

However, the bots (bot_minplayers 2) have completely stopped using the rocket launcher, except for the occasional rocket jump (unbelievable as that sounds).
All other weapons are being used as normal.
I have not been able to find any reason for this at all, and have searched via google, and rechecked the config files several times.

Any suggestions?

A few rockets flying around would liven the game up a bit when there is only one or two humans playing.
Also the bots regularly run out of ammo and become totally useless after that, despite having collected many rockets.

No, I have not found an answer.

Before I asked here, I had re-read all the documentation that I have for Q3 game/server variables. I could find nothing.
I have saved a lot of information for Q3 over the 16 years.

We have the same as you; Q3 arena 1.31 on ubuntu linux 14.04 64bit

All worked well until after migrating to a new server a year ago.

Me and other guys are trying a lot of stuff.
Stuff Already tried
- Replaced PAK*.pk3 files
- Removed no standard pk3
- Tried a server.cfg of another server where the bots use RL
- In a map with only rockets bots prefer use gauntlet

Move the quake server in another server is very easy.
Basically we need a new user, for example q3ds, ad copy the quake folder.
So Other stuff to try could be move quake from ubuntu 14.04 64 to another one.

My last idea is, the bot code get an issue and it is relating to the OS.

I will back here if I have other news.

Thanks for the information.

I have also considered the OS as the root cause.
But we moved our server as a Virtual Machine from the old physical server to a new physical server just over a year ago.

I am just checking with the physical server owner to see if he updated ubuntu during the migration.
Ours was working fine up until the migration, and we have had no other problems.

Hi there,

I don't think it's to do with Point Release version, nor your installation of PK3's, VM or OS.

Here are some other suggestions you can try:

bot_challenge "0"
"make the bot a bit more challenging - MrElusive"

bot_predictobstacles "1"
"possibly tells bot's to predict an obstacle and turn before running into it"

bot_rocketjump "1"
"toggle determines weather the bots will use the rocket jump technique"

Source: http://www.joz3d.net/html/q3console.html

These are meant to make the bots "more challenging" - which in turn would make them use more powerful weapons (ie, RL) - I'd be curious to know if these would work.

Cheers,
Trance, it's more than music, it's a state of mind.

some news ...

Well, I just installed a centos 6.7 32 bit from scratch

To install quake 3 dedicated server I use an old folder...just create the q3ds user and copy the folder...

bots now use the rockets!

Maybe it's related to OS or better to 32 compatibility libs 32

ciao
