You have to remember, that the longer the list of swearwords is the more it pushes down the server-performance.

It requires much more traffic because every time a player writes a message the server has to compare each of the wordparts with each entry in the swearword-list. We already have traffic-problems, a list that contains a hundred of swearwords for all the languages that could come to the server is poison for the gameplay.

My propose is, to reduce the list only to the badest english words. Who cares if there is someone who uses a french bad word? I suppose 95% of the players on the server won't understand it.
Another thing is "whore" for example. It is used by UT itself (auto-chatprovocation, Combo-Whore-reward).

Surely it's not nice to call other players this way, but I would rather give those players a warning as the admin, make the MotD to something like "don't swear, or get banned" or "visit our forum at *link* for server-rules".
If they keep doing it then you can ban them for a week. If they still continue than for two weeks. After that for 3 months and so on until permanent.
The Titans are doing it the same way. They have only a very few words in their filter to keep the traffic low and thrust in their players to behave (or kick them otherwise).

It might seem to be more work to you, but we need every bit of traffic we can save.

In combination with this, I would also reduce the number of spectators to 5. That might be bad for the specs, but it saves us a lot of traffic. For example in Bloodgulch:
For the simpleness just assume, that every player can see every player and all projectiles, like flak shards and linkgun-fire.
Assume, that this would make 100 objects in the map, whose coordinates would need to be sent to all players. But they also need to be sent to the spectators and the server has also perform actions on the specs clicks, such as change the player in view.
If the specs would play, then it would be an exponetial raise in the number of data to server. Anyway, with the specs it is still a linear raise and that might be the traffic we need to be safe of the weapon-bug. It's 100 more + the position of the specators, that needs to be sent to the server all the time.

Thank you for suggestions. I'm not sure if the longer list can slown down the server and I don't think so. Maybe you can ask this guy, who made ServerExt, where is our chat filter from. There isn't hudreds of words, but ca 100. Keeping english words only isn't a good idea. If I tell somebody that he's an assholedick in french and he can't understand it, it's ok? Suck, pussy, whore, bitch are no more filtered anyway, you have to try the filter sometimes, it's still being updated. Most of the people are ignoring any appeals like MOTD, so the five star solution is the right one for them and for us (after the fourth word they'll be kicked autoamtically). And I really don't have enough time watch the game constantly. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that spectators cost almost no traffic, they're watching only and don't increase the data amount for other players. And the server upload is maybe 10 x faster than the game requires and it's processor utilization doesn't cross 35 %.
