Yea, the Lucas electrical systems were murder. They never worked right when they were new, no less used.
By the time I sold that car, I had completely rewired it and converted the 2 - 6 volt batteries to a single 12 volt battery which I mounted in the trunk. But, I could never reverse the polarity to neg. ground. To give you an idea of how bad the electrical system was, when it rained the coil would arc out on the body. The points in the distributer had a plastic cam lobe that would melt under normal operating temp of the engine, so the points were constantly closing and the car would backfire. The drill was to open the dist cap, loosten the points, put a dime in the gap (slose enough) and tighten, until it melted again. Finally, one day an aftermarket came out with a bakolight lobe and solved our problem once and for all. BTW, I got tracking notice that the wire cover kit is on the way. Sailus |
