I was thinking of playing TF2, but a lot of people were telling me I should try DOTA2 instead because in their opinio TF2 sold itself out. Now that I'm reading this, I'm thinking maybe they are wrong because of trolls and such.. so should I give it a try?

As someone who has 2.5k+ hours in tf2 I doubt it'd be pleasing experience. The game is hilariously unbalanced and kind of unfriendly for newbies, but I still encourage you to give it a shot.

thanks, I will, but out of curiosity, what kind of game would you recommend to play instead of TF2? DOTA2?

A lot of games that I've played are more so games with a competitive dynamics.

From when I've first started playing Halo;
http://www.gametracker.com/games/halo/forum.php

I found competitive gametypes to be fun.
The community may be slowly dying, what's left is just a fraction of good players and the others are yet to understand the game.
Might I also add, the temperament of most players is atrocious.

Nevertheless, the game is about to reach drinking age (almost 18 years old).
You'd still find a handful of decent servers with decent players.

The variety of gametypes make Halo unique from other games. (There's even racing in Halo).

It's definitely a game to keep in mind.

There's games like:

(1) Quake
(2) Counter-strike (1.6 & Global Offensive etc)

From my perspective, I liked the competitive environment and it depends on what you like.
Halo, Counter-Stike & Quake - Both fun and competitive.

People do play until this day.

The player-base of those games haven't dissipated and when it does, it almost always re-gains that lost player-base.
